Very good modern hotel

We stayed in this hotel before when it wasnt a ABode hotel yet. The hotel is modernised. We thought that a bit of a pity because of the ambiance (the open fire wasn't in working order anymore and we use to like the old English style of furmiture). But it had also great improvements. The sanitair part was in perfect working order now. Al looks modern and clean. The style of decoration is mow probably more attractive to young people and business people. The location of the hotel is absolutely perfect in the middle of the (car-free) highstreet. Everything in the old center is just a few minutes away. The staff was perfectly friendly and helpfull. The first night we had a small room with a double bed. This is usely no problem, but the bed was very soft and we kept roling to the middle. So we asked for an other room and the staff did everything they could to profide us a twin room (this was a lot larger too). Over all we had a perfect stay and found the staff and the service very good. The only negative thing was the double bed but that problem was quickly and friendly solved. Certainly a hotel to recommend to others !

Transformations in Time
The last time I was at the County Hotel was 2003--the year of the big heat. At that time I was used to borrowing the only fan in the place whenever the hot weather set in. I was in rehearsal for a concert at the Cathedral and coming in from a long day of singing to a hot hotel was not fun. However, it was still the best place in Canterbury. Then I heard the good news--the hotel was now air conditioned. That alone would have made me make this my first place to go before the next concert. Imagine how delighted I was when I saw what had been done in the hotel--the various Oscars were fortunately all wonderful, especially the one who had been at the old County. All the staff at each level were responsible, friendly, and helpful. And the beds! I have very bad arthritis, which always makes travel a bit difficult, but your beds gave me the best travel night's sleep I have had. I even asked for information about the beds--which I have unfortunately misplaced. My one concern is with the food--I found the cold breakfast uninspiring so we never ate one after the first day. And your hot breakfast was overpriced--like many New York hotels. (But in New York you can always get a good quick breakfast of eggs and bacon for about $2--yes, a little less than a pound). So we took our hunger to the small cafe near the Mint Yard Gate--our entrance to the rehearsal space. I contrast your food service with the experiences I have had in Austria when our chorus sings in Salzburg. We all grew to love the hearty breakfasts--at comparable prices, yes, but the variety and abundance of offerings made it worth the time and the money and saw us through a long day of rehearsals. Take a trip to the guest houses in Mondsee, the Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg or the Sacher in Vienna to see what I mean--and the prices are comparable! I also had some overpriced and rather awful fish and chips at the Brewhouse next door. The dish was oily because the oil was not hot enough. Canterbury of all places should have had the best in the southeast. And by the way your beer is much too cold! The good new brews you offer are much better made than Bud and therefore do not need to be icy to please. To summarize: I love the new and very comfortable rooms. The service is super, and friendly helpfulness is there. But the food is a challenge for you. Somehow you have to get the kitchen to think small--right now they are probably so used to mass producing wedding food that they have lost the knack of putting together a real taste of England's best! Thanks for what you do do well--and hopes that next time you'll score tops in everything! Sheila Crowell
resented paying(GBP5) to park in hotel car park (and to pay for breakfast. No indication that these costs were extra on booking form. Noisy - air condition unit right outside window. No seating. Nowhere to put toilet bag etc in bathroom
Was told I could check in between 11 and 2pm. Got there about 11.30 and was told there were no rooms ready yet.
Parking is a major issue. There used to be parking available when I visited last year. Was pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel has been refurbished very nicely. A small refrigerator in the room is a must.
