Custom House - The Custom House was built in 1791 for Dublin port, built with the highest standard of workmanship and materials at that time. All four facades are decorated with ornaments and sculptures made by renowned artists with the dome originally built using Port land stone. The dome was destroyed in a fire during War of Independence in 1921, and was restored using darker coloured Irish Ardbraccan limestone. Now the historic building houses the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. Located on the north bank of the River Liffey, the Custom House has gained considerably huge popularity and became one of the major tourist attractions in Dublin.
You can never miss this Renaissance-styled structure as it's just beside the river bank, and the quay itself named Custom House Quay. The building and its riverbank is a well known photo shooting site, especially from Butt Bridge and Talbot Memorial Bridge. The Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship Museum located just by the riverbank, is an exact replica of the original Jeanie Johnston ship which sailed between Tralee in Co. Kerry and North America between 1847 and 1855, transporting Irish emigrants during the Great Famine. A tour costs between 4.50 Euro for individual to 20 Euro for family, a must see for classic sail ship lovers.
