Smithfield – Smithfield is an area on the north side of Dublin centred at a public square, which formerly was an open market. It's officially known as Smithfield Plaza, but also known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market. Smithfield is also known for the historical horse market held on every first Sunday of the month.
Recent commercial, residential and cultural developments led to the area becoming newly fashionable in the turn of the century, but the economic stagnation during year 2008 to 2010 caused the Irish economy and property market to nose-dive. This has created number of unfinished and unoccupied commercial units at Smithfield Market, which are highly-visible to the public. Notable landmarks here include the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery, although they stopped brewing whiskeys but tours around the distillery are organised daily for visitors. The main catch here is the whiskey tasting after the tour as the tour guide will pick four volunteer before the tour so, if you want to join in the whiskey tasting, make sure you raise your arm when they ask for a volunteer at the beginning of the tour. Another major attraction here is the Observation Tower, but due to corrosion and safety issues, the tower is now closed to public.
