Comment on Hotel :
Cologne may be pricey but for two unrelated grandmothers out on a sightseeing spree, it was worth every penny. It was our first visit to Cologne - we'll probably stay in a cheaper hotel next time now we know the ropes, but this was perfect for a wet week in November - and would be perfect for the Christmas markets. Excelsior Hotel Ernst is bang in the heart of Cologne. It's a 100 yards from the main railway station and literally a stone's throw from the cathedral - we couldn't get lost. The Tourist Information is across the road, along with the Philharmonic concert hall and nearly all the main museums. The biggest Christmas market is also 100 yards away, therefore we could do our sightseeing with ease and return to the hotel for our own coffee, glass of wine, ladies' room, get the things we'd forgotton etc etc. It was SO convenient and we weren't forever buying coffee and drinks just to sit down. Staff were lovely - perhaps a little too helpful on occasion. We had an upgraded room which was enormous and very comfortable - we certainly weren't falling over each other. The minibar, including beer, was free and there was space to put our own white wine and milk. We had breakfast in the hotel - you have to ask if you want cooked breakfast as well as the buffet but they are very obliging. We didn't eat in the hotel at night but used the very adjacent beercellars. There's not a lot of English spoken in Cologne - we were surprised. Chief problem is using the German ticket machines on the train at Cologne airport - use the bus instead - you can pay on the bus and it drops you near the station. Nice hotel - there's a lot to do in Cologne!
