Hotel Caspe, Convenient but a little "cold" Reviewer: Nancy Heller Date of review: 23 July 2008 Recommends this hotel: Neutral Recommended for: Business, Singles Room Hotel Facilities 4 Bed 4 Ambience 3 Cleanliness 4 Service 4 Room Size 4 Location 5 Amenities 4 Value for Money 3 The location of this hotel is excellent: within easy walking distance to the (wonderful) Barcelona Metro system, and several popular tourist destinations. Also, there are two grocery stores quite nearby, which helps U.S. visitors given the (extreme) expense of eating out in the city, in the hotel, or in local restaurants (where, for people paid in U.S. dollars, even modest establishments make it tough to have a meal and still afford to fly home). The staff were mixed; all were reasonably friendly, but only two seemed genuinely warm and well informed. Good security, though a little intimidating on a first encounter (which is presumably intentional). We knew, ahead of time, that this hotel prided itself on its sense of "modern design" and, indeed, the overall black/white/silver metal decor and the (supremely uncomfortable) chairs were anything but "quaint." Even though I'm a university professor of modern/contemporary art, I still found most of the objects chosen to "decorate" the hotel's lobby, rooms, etc. to be a bit TOO severe, and curiously retro (more like postmodern satires of 1960s/70s-era "Moderne" than versions from the 2000s). Still, we loved the b/w, stylized seascape decorating the one wall of our room that had any art at all. Very nice, indeed. It was great to have a mini-fridge in which we could chill our store-bought milk, cheese, etc. (for money-saving picnics), and the "free" water inside was much appreciated. All in all, I would recommend this place, but NOT to families with small children or those seeking "romantic"decor.

At the breakfast we met a waitress who did not speak English nor German, but did not want to serve us. Instead of trying to solve the missunderstanding, she was unfriendly and agressive. Even at the end she did not say sorry or thank you. She should learn at least to smile. We received 2 keys to our room. We could use only 1 of them. The hotel and also the room have a very cold, unfriendly atmosphere.
