Overview
The Hilton Amsterdam Hotel opened in 1962 as the first international Hilton Hotel in Europe. The hotel was designed in 1958 by the Dutch architect Maaskant and was, in fact, the first international hotel in the Netherlands. Its structure continued along the same lines of Berlage's earlier ideas, and the characteristic V-shape is significant in that it shows where the two main avenues of Amsterdam meet; the Apollolaan and the Minervalaan.
The Hilton Amsterdam Hotel is located in the South of Amsterdam in "Het Apollokwartier," the commercial and fashionable heart of the city, 15 minutes from Schiphol Airport and 5 minutes from downtown by taxi. The hotel is surrounded by exclusive shopping areas, museums, galleries and some of the city's most fashionable restaurants, bars and nightlife. In 1998 the hotel was totally rebuilt.
Famous for John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 bed-in, the canalside Hilton Amsterdam Hotel is a short walk from Amsterdam attractions like the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and the renowned Rijks museum.
