We arrived here in late April to find the hotel in the middle of major renovations. Both the reception area and the lift lobby resembled a major construction site.
We were fortunate enough that the staff were maintaining their sense of humour and we got our room before the normal check-in time. On the way to our room we noticed sections of floors were boarded off - still under renovation.
The room was fine. Reasonable size for UK
After we had been out sightseeing in the afternoon we decided we were tired so a drink in the bar then a meal in the restaurant would be ideal.
After waiting quite some time in the bar we were finally told that there was no white wine in the hotel. As we only drink white wine, that was the end of the bar. The restaurant had a sign saying restricted menu. After waiting for several more minutes for a staff member to seat us, we gave it away. Had a very nice meal and a nice bottle of white wine somewhere else.
About two weeks later we stayed here again (why you may ask?).
The reception was bare, concrete floor but no work being carried out (Friday evening) and they had tried hard to clean the area. The lift lobby was finished - freshly painted. The bar and the restaurant were stocked with white wine although the service in the bar was still slow. This time we had a freshly painted room - nice.
Location was practical - Relatively close to station in one direction and town centre in the other direction. This is why we picked this hotel.

Great value for money
Not easy to get to
Lots of building works around, once complete should be brilliant.
Bar is not cheap
Hotel rooms excellent
Choice of smoking/non smoking good
Excellent for shopping
Great people, in and around the hotel

Service on check in was slow due to volume of guests and rooms not being ready by mid-afternoon. Not entirely clean but hotel was completely full and staff were having to rush the cleaning process to make rooms available.

Seemingly the hotel had changed ownership so they had no record of our booking.

I realise you cant do anything about the building works but a warning about them could have been given prior to booking. Also the bar staff were unable to cope with the rush when a concert finished in the CIA. Better soundproofing of the windows, we were awoken at 0700 by the building works. The windows were closed.
