Hotel La Madeleine - a personal experience

Despite reading some poor reviews about this hotel, I actually found it pretty reasonable for the money. The location was excellent, the "standard room" large (and clean) with en-suite facilities (including hair-dryer etc). Breakfast simple but edible "help yourself" continental buffet and staff very pleasant. I would go back again especially as location very close to the city centre and the Metro.

Good but take some ear plugs
The location and hotel are great, but I would recommend trying to avoid a room at the front of the hotel because I got no sleep at all when I stayed there. The hotel overlooks a central, busy square, which has its definite advantages; traffic noise does not bother me, but throughout the night, there were hoardes of drunken, young people (non-Belgian) making a hell of a noise. It was more like a Saturday night in an English town, and not what I'd expect for mid-week Brussels. Between 1.30 AM and 2.30, a group of noisy, angry young Americans decided to have an loud argument outside the nearby IBIS. Then at about 3.30 AM, a Spanish couple had a shouting match for half an hour. The hotel and its general location are good, though, and the staff are excellent. However, if I stay there again, I'll make sure I get a room at the back of the hotel, and definitely take some very effective ear plugs just in case I can't. Or at least until the hotel fits double-glazing at the front of the building. So in summary - good, but take so decent ear-plugs.
room too noisy as at front of building
Quite noisy outside Switched room after first night as it didn't have wifi available.
It would be better to have at least one single "multi national" plug. However the receptionist provided me with an adaptor.
