Our first impression: serenity! The beautiful cherry blossoms as we entered the complex, the soothing music, & the helpful staff person at the desk told us right away that our decision to stay here was the right one! We wanted authentic Belgian surroundings for at least part of our stay in the country, However, we felt that the price was quite steep for the spartan rooms & the fact that breakfast was not included in the cost. When we returned for a fourth night, the room we stayed in (I believe it was 1.1 or 1.2 in the Breedhuis) needed 2 or 3 lightbulbs replaced & the shower needed a new sprayer. We learned about Monasterum PoortAckere Ghent through our local newspaper (St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.) when they reviewed monastery/hotels in Europe. Since this was to be our very first trip without a tour, we felt that this was a safe choice. And it definitely was!! Our first impression of Belgium included your friendly staff person. She was most helpful & very patient since we had so many questions for her. Thank you for your part in our memories of Belgium. Shay Mullally
Different but definitely recommended
Overall this hotel was good value for money. The initial impression on entering the place is a certain sense of drabness in its corridors and standard rooms, but you have to remember that it used to be a nunnery and therefore its ambience truly has been retained. The site has an intriguing layout, being cross-shaped and with the perfectly preserved chapel at the front, now used - respectfully - for functions. There is a very wide range of room types and I had some fun exploring the corridors of the other sections of the hotel to compare the differences in style. Considering the 3 couples in our group had booked pretty much identical rooms, the amount of space available in each room and en suite bathroom varied hugely and it really was the luck of the draw. One couple had an enormous bedroom with a brick-arched ceiling, accompanied by a vast bathroom, which could have been the result of an unannounced upgrade whilst at the other end of the spectrum another couple had a very small bathroom, albeit combined with a good-sized room. Two definite pluses were an excellent shower with copious quantities of hot water, and thermostatically controlled triple radiators which - in mid-December - were extremely welcome features. A great breakfast selection although not a huge amount of hot food but then this is The Continent.
excellent in all aspects except extra charge for parking car - unexpected
austerity in a great location

despite having booked a double bed we were told that there were none and given twin beds pushed together but with seperate bedding. the staff were charming but overworked with the poor lady on reception having to leave it unattended in order to serve drinks in the bar (this may not normally be the case, there did seem to be some kind of event going on) the room was very cold when we arrived but did warm up considerably after a few hours. we returned at 11pm ( a very reasonable hour in belgium) and had to wait some time in the rain before anyone let us in. Finally we were billed incorrectly by 10 euros despite the tarriffs being desplayed next to the reception desk but i did not mind this because we had parked for 2 days and only been charged for one and this equated to the extra 10 on the bill for the room. Ultimately a rather shoddy opperation with the rooms we stayed in having very little of the medieval ambience we had hoped for to make uf for the austerity. Luckily the location was very convenient and the availability of parking was definately a bonus.
Interesting Hotel
Clever convertion from old Monastery. Staff friendly and helpful, I was unable to take breakfast because of early departure. Good location near city centre. Rooms were quite small but adequate for short stay, bed comfortable, shower room was separate from single rooms although this didn't cause any problems. Lovely cosy atmosphere in the hotel.
Hotel Monasterium PoortAckere
The room was huge, peaceful and simply but well appointed. The ambience is lovely. The breakfast was excellent, as was the multi-lingual service. The position is absolutely spot-on whether for business or pleasure. because of its position you don't have to mess with the dreaded one way system round the city centre!
