Regarding the origin of Gelston's Corner at Strandtown, it is believed that
the present Stormont Inn at the corner was known as Gelston's Public House. In
1870 Strandtown was a village separate from Belfast and had a population of some
140.
Mrs Gelston owned the property which was an inn, groceries and provisions
store in 1870. Even though she was only there for a short while she succeeded in
leaving her name behind for Gelston's Corner is still known and used. Mr Hugh
Gelston, Mrs Gelston's predecessor in roughly 1880 was then the grocer, spirit
and provision dealer in Strandtown.
