Having arrived in Newcastle and eventually found the hotel car park entrance (minimal directions and a mis-leading address) we settled into our room. We were somewhat surprised at the level of street noise which assaulted our ears as the evening progressed, and found that sleep was completely impossible until this had died down, sometime after 1.00 a.m. We would have expected a hotel of this standard at least to have double glazing to help reduce severe street noise, but it did not. This was a week day night and predictably, Friday and Saturday nights proved to be much worse! This considerably spoiled what was meant to be a relaxing long weekend. We could not possibly recommend the hotel to families or couples hoping to go away for the weekend and cannot possible imagine that it would suit buisness people needing to be fresh for important meetings after a night's sleep similiar to the ones we experienced. Furthermore, when we arrived for breakfast on the Sunday morning, well within the finishing time for this meal, there was almost no cooked food left and people were having to wait some time for a meal to be prepared. In our case, this delayed our departure time. Considering that we would not recommend this hotel to anyone, it is frustrating that we do not have the option to leave the boxes in the 'What kind of stay do you think this hotel is good for?' section blank. We have therefore selected 'singles' as they are perhaps most likely to be out 'on the town' and therefore least affected by noise.
Food was OK. One receprtionist was extremely helpful, and the other, unfortunately on duty when we arrived for check in, was pretty unhelpful and disinterested, didn't seem to know anything much about the town, or seem inclined to put herself out to tell us anything. There was no spare toilet paper or glasses in our room, and a maid the following morning told me there was a shortage throughout the hotel. Because it may have been due to the abnormal situation of the flooding in the UK I thought that was probably acceptable and did not complain.
poor pillows
Nice hotel, but too many flies in the restaurant.
It needs to be refurbished badly. Breakfast was poor
