The Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge which connect the Old town Square and Mala Strana. It was originally called the Stone Bridge (Kamenny most) in the first few centuries. According to a legend mortar used for the bridge contains egg yolks which should make its construction stronger. Its construction, which began in 1357, was commissioned by the Czech King and the Holy Emperor Charles IV. The architect in charge was Petr Paler. Among his work is St. Vitus cathedral at the Prague Castle.
