As a regular visitor to the Frankfurt International Book Fair for many years, I always look for accommodations in some of the smaller towns close to Frankfurt, hotels in the city itself being either unavailable or unaffordable at Fair time. I have been all over the area. I hit upon the Schottenhof in Mainz last year. This year I picked it deliberately. While somewhat on the austere side (and maybe up for some renovation soon), the hotel is ideally located for the trade visitor doing business in Frankfurt. It is just about a three-minute walk from the main railway station (and from the shuttle bus to Frankfurt Hahn airport, the landing spot of Ryanair and other discount airlines). Trains, both local and ICE, are leaving for Frankfurt every 30 minutes or so, and the ride is about a half an hour. Rooms are sufficiently big and spotlessly clean, if a bit on the worn side, breakfast is fine, and my room was quite too. My only complaint is that while there is supposed to be a complimentary WLAN connection in every room, which is a great thing, it was completely useless: my laptop made connection when switched on but the system "mycloud" rejected the login and password provided to me by the desk upo my arrival. Th staff, while very helpful otherwise, seemed perplexed and did not know the first thing about how it could be made work, and so it remained throughout my stay. Some other guests had the same problem, or so I heard. Still, the hotel was fine for me for the three-day business trip to the book fair.
